hunting salt

A little weekend getaway was in order last week. We headed to Sebastopol with grand plans of camping and abalone diving.

After devin made some delicious tacos on Friday, we were in search of the arcade game Big Buck Hunter. It's a favorite of Devin and me and Scott was talking about wanting to get a rifle to shoot stuff so it seemed like a perfect Friday evening activity. Little did we know it was Friday Night Lights in Sebastopol, and all the local high school football coaches were hanging out at the local downtown bar. And there was no Big Buck Hunter so we played some shuffle board (or quaits or weights if you're an east coaster) and called it a night. Strangely, the next morning devin was chatting with some guy at the bagel shop and this guy apparently recognized us from the bar. He was lamenting that a big fight broke out just a few minutes after we left and we had missed it. Bummer.

On Saturday we headed to Salt Point for some camping. The plan was to camp, try to surf a bit on Sunday morning, and then meet up with some other friends on Sunday afternoon so Devin could go abalone diving.

Look how cool blue lobster looks with surfboards on it. Too bad the water had waves as big as a bathtub's. So we just looked cool...no surfing was even attempted.

We ditched this campsite once we realized there was no protection from the cold ocean breezes. And I think we were downwind from those porta-potties.

Scott and I were in charge of the tents while devin and sarah started dinner. Bocce balls make the best hammers.

Mmm, sarah whipped up some gourmet camp food.

On Sunday we checked a few surf spots and then grabbed a bite to eat before heading out for a small hike. klaus was pumped to be off-leash and cruise around the rocks on the beach.

It's ridiculous to get a picture with an animal. Sarah persisted and klaus gave us a glamour pose.

Sarah and devin spied some sea anenomes.

In our kitchen, we have a "d and k wishlist." A couple of months ago, I noticed a new addition to the list. "salt hunt" Salt hunt?? Devin explained that a friend of ours who is in the culinary arts business told him about some of her friends going on a salt hunt. He wanted to put on his camo, grab his sieve, and hunt down some of Morton's favorite crystals. Everyone who noticed salt hunt on the list looked quizically at it and either snickered or politely showed interest. Well, devin gleefully crossed "salt hunt" off the list this week.

We noticed a small puddle with what looked like white slush. Someone joked that perhaps we had just hunted salt.

Someone then threw down a double-dog dare to taste it.

We all took the dare and, "that's salt! we hunted salt!!" So we wrapped some salt in the receipt from lunch and carefully placed it in one of klaus's unused poop bags. And now we have some of the freshest darn salt ever. And devin had his glory after we had all poked fun at his wish for a salt hunt.

Stalking salt is quite difficult, mind you nay-sayers. Just when you think you have it cornered, its cunning always wins out as a wave washes it back from whence it came.
